19/03/10 - Go Font Ur Self* SYD Recap

On Thursday we checked out the Go Font Ur Self exhibition at Peer Gallery, inside a heritage listed church hall in Glebe, Sydney. This was the 4th Chapter and also the 1 year anniversary of the typography exhibition. We caught up with Marty Routledge the curator of the typographic showcase who said that they now have a total of 60 artists from around the world who have exhibited so far. He also said with every ‘Chapter’ , this unique typed-based show has grown at an exponential rate.

Chapter 4 features Above, Raza Uno, Istvan Szugyiczky, Sarah A. King, Adrian Gray, Blends, Paul Nolan, Marin Horikawa, Saynt, Timba Smits, Super Expresso, Yok, Rob Abel and Helen Mycroft. With Chapter 5’s planning almost in the bag we can’t wait to see more of the biggest and best and probably one of the most impressive exhibitions in Australia entirely devoted to type-based artwork. If you’re in Melbourne the exhibit opens on the 1st of April at No Vacancy. Click here for details.

12/03/10 - The King of Kong - A Fistfull of Quarters

A friend of mine highly recommended me to watch a documentary call the King of Kong - A Fist Full of Quarters. His spiel went along the lines of, this guys who’s in his 30’s tries to break the world record score on Donkey Kong. The first thing that came to mind was the movie ‘The Wizard’ with Fred Savage, with his gaming genius little brother and the first time you see ‘the ‘Power Glove!’ (Remember that!) Anyway this film is worth the watch, opening your eyes to the world of competitive gaming on ‘Classic Arcade’ machines made popular during the early to mid 80’s also known as the ‘Golden Age of Video Arcade Games’.

Believe it or not, after all these years people are still trying to break top scores on games like Pac-Man, Galaga, Space Invaders, Paperboy and Q Bert to name a few.

The DVD will be available to us Aussies on May 5th… that’s if you can wait. Check out the trailer -

*** WARNING TRAILER INCLUDES DISTURBING HAIR STYLES ***

PS The top score for Donkey Kong was recently broken on the 27 of Feb 2010 by a New York brain surgeon, Dr. Hank Chien with a score of 1,061,700.
