10/02/09 - Victoria Fires

It has been a dark and tragic period in Victoria over the past week and it will leave its mark on Australian history as one of the worst ever bushfires.  With temperatures topping 46 degrees the bushfires have burned and ravaged communities, taken lives, livelihoods and destroyed all in its path. Lives will be forever changed. But to think that some sick individual is behind this heinous act is absolutely disgusting.

We at Deepsurface would like to express our deepest sympathies and condolences to all the people and families that have been affected by this horror… Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

And to all the brave individuals who are doing their part to help with the relief efforts, we salute you for your selflessness especially those on the frontline fighting the ravaging fire beast than burns.

But it is amazing to see us Australians banding together when times of need are at its greatest.

Please show your support by donating to the Australian Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal 2009

09/02/09 - DS Elements - Wind

Last but not least the Wind Element is a special design being the only one out of the collection to have two variations. The two different colours selections of each print is specifically chosen to go onto a black and white tee. These designs rekindled the basics of art theory and the choice of certain contrast and complimentarty colours to create a mood. The two schemes created opposite results. The White vs the Black is much like Day vs Night, they have totally opposite moods but the same design, a typical Deepsurface ideology.  The five colour streaks form a horizon into a number of wind generators. The wind generators represent the natural energy and DS’s current environment awareness.

08/02/09 - DS Elements - Earth

The Earth Design was inspired by the current high definition revolution.

Deepsurface wanted to push the limits on what was capable in today’s screen-printing technology.  This detailed image of earth from a satellites’s point of view is digitally printed.  This tee pays homage to DS’s place of origin, Brisbane City, Australia. An added twist to its geographic make up, the DS Neo logo is seen in the river line.

08/02/09 - DAS Super Paper Re-cap

Thursday night was the DAS SUPER PAPER launch. We dropped by the event to check out the latest fresh Sydney talent that was on offer. The night featured works of art, people and free drinks…a perfect night!

Anna Zhu featured a piece here from her ‘Skin’ narrative project. Anna recently became a finalist for the Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize 2009. She will also be having an exhibition in the coming weeks over at Bondi, check out her website for details and to see her body of work.

And the man that made this night possible.  The night speaks for itself, no need to show you his face. But if curiosity has gotten the better of you click here.

07/02/09 - DS Elements - Water

“The Great Wave off Kanagawa” - a famous woodblock print by Japanese artist Hokusai (1832).  His unique style in representing a great wave breaking over boats is much like an analogue of Deepsurface breaking into the streetwear industry.  Using the same stylistic influences of ”The Great Wave”, the vivid blue wave break is intergrated into a Japanese Family Crest and symbolizes the three co-founders of “Deepsurface”.

Deepsurface is also translated into katakana below the crest.

06/02/09 - DS Elements - Fire

The DS Elements is a four piece collection. We figured we’re laying the foundation down on a certain standard we wanna bring to you so naturally in parallel to that we bring you the foundation of the elements Fire, Water, Earth and Wind.

For the Fire Element we based our design on the bold and fiery attitude of a popular 80’s Transformer “Hot Rod”, the outline of the Fire print draws similarities to the firebird decal on his front body. One of the more striking designs from the collection, the Fire Element’s purpose is to be seen from afar. Within its sharply curved linework a firebird emerges, perched on top of “deepsurface”.

The meaning behind this design is more than meets the eye.
